Last weekend “Law Abiding Citizen” came out on DVD. So I decided to sit down with a
nice meal and a soft drink and give you all the inside scoop on it. Warning! To all my new readers this review contains a spoiler! If you don’t want to know abou the movie and how it ended STOP reading NOW! Ok, now that you’ve been warned let’s move on.
It’s a very exciting movie and I do recommend people see it. This is because overall the movie had everything the average movie goer could ask for. That formula includes standard plot, an all star cast, good acting, blood and gore, and of course lots of explosions. Big, over the top explosions Michael Bay would be proud of. However, the only law this movie didn’t abide by was the fact that films should make sense. There should be no loopholes in a script. Period. How the hell does a guy build tunnels underneath a jail and then know exactly which cell he would be put in? Yes, that’s what happened. How does nobody recognize someone dropping off a bomb disposal robot complete with machine guns and missile launchers in the middle of a quiet cemetary? That happened. Anyway, if you’re a person like me that actually CARES about a movie’s plot and all that character development nonsense the movie gets an unstable 2 out 5. Yikes! However, most likely you’ll enjoy it.
PLOT- The movie starts off showing Clyde Sheldon (Gerard Butler) wo
rking in his home and his daughter next to him making bracelets out of letter cubes. She’s made one for Clyde with “Daddy” on it. Someone knocks on the door and when Clyde opens it, Darby and Ames knock him down. Darby and Ames proceed to tie Clyde and his wife up, and Darby stabs them both and rapes Clyde’s wife as Clyde watches hopelessly. As Clyde is struggling, Darby tells him “you can’t fight fate”. His wife dies and just before Clyde passes out, Darby kills his daughter.
At the Philadelphia courthouse, we see Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) talking with his boss about Nick’s high conviction rate (96%). Nick, who represents Clyde, says he is going to take a deal with the defense whereby Darby will provide testimony to convict Ames to death row in order to receive third-degree murder charges (which amounts to about 5 years jail time). When Nick reveals the deal to Clyde, Clyde becomes very angry at the faulty justice system, which let his wife and daughter’s murderers off the hook. Ten years later, Nick is very successful and becomes the Assistant DA.
ENDING! - Clyde gets arrested for cutting Darby’s body into 22 pieces and Ames dies horrifically at Clyde’s hands. He gets arrested for the murders and decides to teach the judicial system a lesson. In the end, almost everybody besides Nick Rice dies. They either get shot up or blown up by Clyde. Turns out Clyde built a tunnel under the prison in order to move in and out unnoticed. He had a part time job working as a cleaner at city hall. Clyde eventually gets blown to bits when Nick and some other guy trick him into detinating a bomb in his jail cell. Applause.
